Prof. Jiang Yuhui was guest speaker of this University Library Research Commons talk.

Throughout the history of Chinese painting, the female boudoir painters have dramatically demonstrated their prominent distinctions which could or should be comprehended from different perspectives. The studies of cultural history, the feminist research, and the critical analysis of power and discourse, etc., have all contributed greatly to the further understanding of these female painters' art world. However, the philosophical thinking, especially phenomenology, might offer us an alternative angle. The problem of synaesthesia, one of the major themes in Phenomenology of Perception, could serve as a guiding thread into this magnificent pictorial world. Developing the argument along this main...

Fredrick Scott Archer (1813-1857) discovered a wet plate photography. A mixture of a bromide, iodide or chloride dissolved in collodion was poured onto a tintype or clean glass plate for a few seconds. Once this reaction was complete, then moved on to expose, develop, fix and finally rinse it. As the glass plate is getting wet throughout the whole processes from adding the chemicals to taking the picture, this process is also known as “Wet Plate Collodion Photography”.

“I have been a professional for many years in the industry. However, I can no longer feel happiness and satisfaction from the digital photos that I created. This is also the reason that I have started picking up ‘wet plate photography’. To me, the process and the experience of creating a truly original and unique...
