Eminent mathematician Professor Shing-Tung Yau is an alumnus of CUHK. At the age of 27, he solved the difficult geometry problem known as the Calabi conjecture. The “Calabi-Yau manifold” he proposed has been applied to string theory in physics. Professor Yau is the first Chinese to win two of the highest honours in mathematics, the Fields Medal and the Wolf Prize. He is currently Distinguished Visiting Professor-at-Large, the Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences at CUHK and the Founding Director of Zhizhen School of Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences.
