Program 1: Sharpening Your Research Skills

Literature Review for a Successful Research Paper

This workshop will cover the following to help you conduct a good literature review:

  • The purpose and process of literature review
  • The structure of a literature review
  • Effective strategies for identifying relevant literature

Exploring Research Information in Your Field in Multi-disciplinary Databases (I)

This workshop will demonstrate:

  • How to use ScienceDirect, IEEE Xplore, EBSCOHost and ProQuest to discover research information in your research field
  • Advanced search features in the databases
  • Multiple databases selection (where applicable)

Exploring Research Information in Your Field in Multi-disciplinary Databases (II)

This workshop will demonstrate:

  • How to use Web of Science Core Collection (Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, Arts & Humanities Citation Index, etc.) and Scopus to discover research information (journal and book articles, and conference papers) in your research field
  • How to search with topic, keywords, author, author identifier, etc.

Getting New Research Information Automatically

This workshop will demonstrate how to use Web of Science Core Collection, Scopus and ScienceDirect to set up:

  • search alerts so that the most updated search results will be sent to you automatically by email
  • citation alerts of journal articles and authors (where appropriate)
  • journal alerts

Understanding the Significance of Research Papers: the Meaning behind Citation Counts and Various Metrics

This workshop will cover:

  • The strength and limitations of different citation counts and metrics such as journal impact factors and CiteScore
  • How to use citation counts and other metrics to assess the relative significance of research papers
  • Find an author’s h-index

Program 2: Doing Data Analysis for Your Research

Using ATLAS.ti for Qualitative Data Analysis

This hands-on workshop will introduce how to use ATLAS.ti to conduct qualitative data analysis. Participants will learn how to use ATLAS.ti to conduct:

  • Data description, such as creating codes, coding, using memo, and writing comments on your data
  • Data analysis and interpretation such as using the functions of hyperlink, network view, query tool, and co-occurrence to explore patterns and develop themes

Remarks:
Participants will have to bring your personal computers and install a free trial version of ATLAS.ti 8 (http://atlasti.com/free-trial-version/) before the workshop. Participants are welcome to bring along your qualitative research data.

Program 3: Managing Citations for Your Research

EndNote Basic for Researchers

This workshop will help you get started with EndNote Basic, a bibliography management tool. It will demonstrate:

  • How to create a free account
  • How to produce bibliographies and in-text references in a variety of citation styles (e.g. MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) for your papers
  • How to import references into EndNote Basic directly from databases and organizing them
