Chung Chi College Elisabeth Luce Moore Library (CCL) is one of the busiest libraries on campus. Its convenient location close to the MTR and on the lower campus has resulted in just over half a million visits per year. This figure is very stable, not showing a decline despite the opening of the WMY Learning Commons and the Pommerenke Student Centre nearby in 2011.
The 2014 Library survey highlighted a level of dissatisfaction with the facilities at CCL. Specifically there was a demand for additional study space, computers and printing facilities. Given this challenging situation, the Library refurbished CCL ground, first and second floors during the last 3 summers from 2017 to 2019.
With the completion of this 3-in-One Renovation Projects, Chung Chi Library has entered a new era in space planning. A more spacious learning cluster with additional seats and computing facilities for users are provided. Reshuffling of library materials and the consolidation of various subject collections like music and education are possible after the space re-organization. RFID self-checkout and self-return stations facilitate convenient and speedy check-out and real-time check-in of library materials.
1. Ground Floor (Summer 2017)
In September 2017, the Ground Floor of CCL was renovated to become a new Learning Cluster with new reading tables, chairs and sofas. More than 100 seats were provided in the Learning Cluster. The major changes after the renovation were to increase study and workstation space on the ground floor, and to implement the RFID self-service by:
- Converting the existing G/F staff office & counter area to users’ study space;
- Relocating the staff office from G/F to 2/F;
- Providing a help desk on G/F;
- Utilizing the existing closed stack space, and relocating materials to the Special Collections in the University Library;
- Providing a RFID Self Service Borrow & Return – Three self-checkout stations enabled by RFID technology facilitate convenient and speedy check-out of books. RFID enabled book return station provide users with self-return service with real-time check-in;
- Implementing roving services – By removing the counter and re-conceptualizing the help desk area there is better support for users through a roving service;
- Adding Group Study Rooms – Two group study rooms with LCD screens & notebooks provide meeting and study space for groups of 3 to 7 people.
2. First Floor (Summer 2018)
The renovation of First Floor was completed in September 2018. The First Floor was remodeled to utilize study area and provide more shelving space for the existing collections and its future expansion. The major changes after the renovation project were:
- Increased study spaces;
- Addition of new compact shelving;
- Widening the walking passage to achieve better circulation;
- Re-location of the faculty rooms for better positioning;
- Re-grouping the group discussion rooms.
3. Second Floor (Summer 2019)
Following the successful Ground Floor and First Floor renovations, the Second Floor was refurbished to include a purpose built Music Library in September 2019. The Second Floor was renovated with the provision to house the significant music and audio visual collection of over 110,000 items. With consultation and input from the Music Department academic staff, four sound proof music and listening rooms were built and all the music and audio visual collections are merged to meet the objective of a new specialized library within CCL. Changes after renovation included:
- Increased study and workstation space;
- Provision of a music hub with four sound proof music and listening rooms;
- Relocation of the entire music and audio visual collections including periodical and reference books to 2/F;
- Addition of new compact shelving;
- Widening the walking passage to achieve better circulation;
- Reorganizing the collections and facilities to maximize the view;
- Inclusion of study clusters inside the shelving areas;
- Relocation of the study room (barrier free facilities and services) for better positioning.
