    When analysing qualitative data, researchers can use an inductive or deductive approach to examining sources of data.   • Unlocking the Sheng Xuanhuai Archive @ CUHK

    Sheng Xuanhuai (1844-1916), a powerful and resourceful merchant, politician, banker, diplomat, philanthropist, and educator, was the driving force of China’s industrialization and modernization during the late Qing to early Republican period.

    The Sheng Xuanhuai Archive at the Chinese University of Hong Kong was acquired by the Art Museum in 1985, under the auspice of the late Dr. J.S. LEE and Mr. CHENG Chi. It comprises 77 volumes with almost 4 million characters in over 13,000 correspondences among Sheng Xuanhuai, his family members, and colleagues. The archive is key to understanding that period of seismic changes, and it will revolutionize the study of late Qing and early Republican China.

  • Exhibition Talk - John Thomson : The Intrepid Traveller and the Survival of His Photographic Collection (In Cantonese)

    Unlike most travellers to China during this era, John Thomson was not a missionary, nor a government officer. He travelled to China as a professional photographer only a few decades after the invention of photography. In this talk, Betty Yao will follow Thomson’s footsteps, starting with his time in Hong Kong. She will look at the people and places he photographed. She will divulge the story, the twists and turns behind the survival of this valuable through 150 years.

  • Sharing Session and Launch of Modern Chinese Drama Collection

    香港中文大學圖書館推出全文圖像《中國現代戲劇館藏》( http://repository.lib.cuhk.edu.hk/en/collection/drama )，此批戲劇書籍原購於六十年代中期，是研究現代中國戲劇的寶庫。已掃描並完成上載的書籍共1700餘冊，主要包括三十及四十年代著作，絕版戲劇書、初版和油印的劇本和戲劇理論、技術書等。在新的《中國現代戲劇館藏》平臺還嵌入中國現代劇本提要及評論。

    《中國現代戲劇館藏》分享及發布會將由崔文東教授講述當年聯合書院姚克教授從戲劇書籍收藏家胡振先生購入該批書籍的故事，并由張秉權博士介紹其早年與何杏楓教授合撰之《「中國現代戲劇特藏」抗戰前中國現代劇本提要及評論》。此外，他們亦會講述至五十多年後的今天將部份精選館藏掃瞄及上載至「香港中文大學數碼典藏」的建庫過程。兩位講者亦會分享此數碼館藏對相關研究的幫助。

    近數十年科技發展迅速，在多年前被譽為時代最先端的遊戲，也會在數年之間被視為落後的產品。因此，比起紙製的書本，以不同的電子媒介所儲存的資料的保存更是刻不容緩。遊戲保育是要把儲放在舊式電子媒介內的資料，以數碼法的形式記錄下來。電腦及電子遊戲基本上代表了所在區域的文化素養，也顯示出工餘時的消遣喜好變化，無論在研究人類的文化娛樂歷史，還是電子程式寫作的進化步伐等，電腦及電子遊戲均擔當著重要的角色。

    現時在美國及日本兩地已有機構開始致力於把舊遊戲數碼化及妥善保存，但其活動受限於地域，對於香港、台灣及中國等地的收藏及舊作品則難以觸及。這些華文遊戲雜誌往往反映了中港台三地的年輕人對遊戲的看法及取向，如未能適當地保存起來，實是華民地區的一大損失。

  • Hong Kong Through the Lens of John Thomson

    This is an exhibition devoted to the images of Hong Kong taken by John Thomson (1837-1921), a pioneering Scottish photographer, geographer, and traveler.

    Born in Edinburgh in June 1837, after his schooling Thomson worked for an optical and scientific instrument maker. He first travelled Asia in 1862, and undertook numerous journeys photographing countries including Siam, Cambodia, Vietnam and many areas in China over the next 10 years. In 1868, he established a studio in Hong Kong at Commercial Bank Building, Queen’s Road Central. He photographed Hong Kong’s landscapes, buildings, harbor and people. His excellent work in China and other Asian countries established him as a pioneer of photo-journalism and one of the most influential photographers of his time.

    Who am I? Where am I? Who is trying to wake me up?
    Though the woken sleepwalker will not be scared to death, they would just be confused like ordinary people who woke up. For some cases, they might act violently due to the confusion.
    They open their eyes during sleepwalking. Not only can they walk freely, but also carry out habitual behavior. Since the brain is in dormant state, patient cannot distinguish any ongoing events. For example, inability in face recognition, no reaction to pain stimulation, talking to oneself without communication.
    We do not want to indulge in dreams. But who is stopping the sleepwalkers from wakening...
  • Exhibition Talk: Wet Plate Collodion Photography

    Fredrick Scott Archer (1813-1857) invented the photographic wet-collodion process in the 19th century. A mixture of a bromide, iodide or chloride dissolved in collodion was poured onto a tintype or clean glass plate for a few seconds. Once this reaction was complete, then moved on to expose, develop, fix and finally rinse it. As the glass plate is getting wet throughout the whole processes from adding the chemicals to taking the picture, this process is also known as “Wet Plate Collodion Photography”.

    Only through the “touching the ground” experience, can we understand the meaning of material culture in the past and explain to our contemporaries why we need to care about archaeological ruins. Our students learned a wide range of fieldwork skills and techniques through these meaningful archaeological internships. More important, the hands-on experience provides a great chance to them for better understanding the Bronze Age civilization in Sichuan and the Jiangkou sunken treasure legend.
