Recognizing the importance of understanding and engaging China, and contributing to its development, CUHK established the Institute of Chinese Studies shortly after its inception. At a time when research in China was often not possible, the Institute soon became a beacon for China Studies. In its early years, China research focused on history, language and literature, philosophy, translation, regional studies and sociology. Following China’s opening up and modernization since the late 1970s, the University has broadened the scope of its China studies to cover economy, commerce, politics, law and development of the legal system, public health and environment to deepen the understanding of China from multiple perspectives and take part in the development of the country through exploring its challenges and opportunities.
