Professor D.C. Lau was appointed Professor of Chinese at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1978. He has since held many key positions, including Dean of Arts (1980-83), Chief Editor of The Journal of Chinese Studies (1979-95), and Director of the T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre (1979-2007).
Professor Lau was an expert in philosophy and linguistics with a rigorous scholarship. He was widely recognised as an authoritative figure in the field of translation and produced concise translations of ancient Chinese texts, among which Lao Tzu: Tao Te Ching, Mencius, and Confucius: The Analects are considered classics and essential reading for Western scholars studying Chinese philosophy. Other publications of high acclaim include Guang ya shu zheng: Xin shi biao dian, The Pre-Han and Han Concordance Series, The Six Dynasties Concordance Series, Between Language and Thought, D.C. Lau: English Writings Rendered into Chinese and A Study of the Rhyme Stucture of the Huainanzi.
