CUHK has positioned itself as an institution of higher learning with a global vision since its inception in 1963. With a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West, the University has been actively engaging in exchanges with the global academic community. CUHK is the pioneer in student exchange in the region, kicking off its first student exchange programme with the University of California in 1965. The University has also maintained close ties with universities in mainland China, Macau and Taiwan since the 1980s. In 2014, CUHK-Shenzhen was founded and enrolled its first batch of students. To date, the University has forged partnerships with over 460 universities and institutions around the world to promote exchanges and collaboration in research, as well as running joint programmes and research centres.
